city trip to vilnius, lithuania

from august 31th until september 3rd 2007 me and some friends of mine were on a city trip in vilnius, lithuania (europe). vilnius is the capital of lithuania and has a population of about 555'000. this old town has about 40 churches and many other old buildings of the baroque or classicism age. its old town is unesco world heritage.

vilnius is an ideal city for a two to four day city trip. because it is not too big you can check it all out. without being stressed out. the best time to visit is during the european summer, when it is not too cold. when we were there, it was always quite windy and sometimes cold. lithuania is part of the european union, but its currency is "lithuanian litas". lithuania is not expensive, but as everywhere in the world, the cities are the most expensive places. it is worth to check the prices before ordering in a restaurant.

accommodation

the best placed hotels are around "gedimina avenue". this is also the best place to get started for sightseeing and going out in the evening. we have booked rooms in the hotel " ambassador vilnius". it was the cheapest there - there was a good offer on  expedia.de.

things to see and do

• the old town is unesco world heritage, very big and contains over 40 churches and 1500 old buildings of the baroque and classicism age.
• the old t.v. tower is a bit outlying, but can be reached by bus. it costs some litas, but offers an amazing view over the whole city.
• "gediminas avenue" is the mayor pedestrian zone where people meet. a lot of cafes and restaurants, as well as clubs, are located here.
• the nightlife is perfect - so many bars and clubs await you.

getting there and away

vilnius is becoming more touristic since it is part of the european union. but flight connections aren't so good. cheapest airline flying to the baltic countries is " airbaltic". the earlier you book, the cheaper it is.
